Purifier cartridges are replaced on two clocks – a calendar interval and a capacity in liters, whichever comes first. For tap water of standard quality, the usual intervals are: mechanical and carbon pre-filtration every 3 months, and the UF membrane and final carbon every 6 months. What stages make up a purifier’s filtration?

A typical purifier has four stages. Each stage has its own capacity, so they’re replaced at different intervals.

  • Sediment – mechanical pre-filtration. A polypropylene filter collects sand, rust, and suspended solids from the pipeline. It takes the first load and protects the other stages.
  • Pre-carbon – carbon pre-filtration. Activated carbon removes chlorine, organics, and foreign odors – the things that spoil the taste of tap water the most.
  • UF membrane – fine filtration. Pores around 0.01 µm trap bacteria, microparticles, and turbidity: this is the purifier’s main safety barrier.
  • Post-carbon – final polishing. It refines the taste and aroma of the already-filtered water before it reaches the spout.

The order of the stages is deliberate: cheap mechanical filtration shields the more expensive carbon and membrane. If the sediment filter is clogged, suspended solids move downstream and prematurely “kill” the next stages – so cutting corners on timely pre-filtration replacement ends up wearing out the whole set faster.

How often to replace cartridges: timing by stage?

Keep in mind that 3 and 6 months aren’t a marketing ritual – they’re the calculated capacity of the sorbent and membrane at typical water usage. If a site “drinks through” 3,000 L faster, you need to replace sooner than the calendar says.

The “whichever comes first” rule is easy to check with an example. Say a station dispenses about 50 L a day: a 3,000 L capacity runs out in 2 months – so you replace the pre-filtration before the calendar’s three. With modest use of 10–15 L a day, the cartridge lasts to its scheduled date – and then the calendar governs.

A separate case is models that use a reverse-osmosis (RO) membrane instead of ultrafiltration. Its timing differs: a capacity of up to 6,000 L and replacement at least once every 12 months, with some units rated for up to 24 months in the manual. The reference point is always the same – the specific model’s schedule.

What affects how long cartridges last?

There are three main factors: source water quality, usage intensity, and maintenance discipline. The rated intervals assume tap water of standard quality – hard, iron-rich, or cloudy water clogs cartridges about twice as fast. And the more people drink from a station, the sooner replacement comes by capacity rather than by the calendar.

  • Source water. Hardness salts, iron, and suspended solids are the main load on pre-filtration. Water quality in Kazakhstan varies noticeably by region, so during the first year of use, check the condition of the cartridges at every replacement – and adjust the schedule to your own site.
  • Usage intensity. Capacity is about 3,000 L: a school common area with hundreds of students uses it up far faster than a ten-person office. At high-traffic sites, count in liters, not months.
  • Maintenance discipline. Unrecorded replacement dates undo any schedule: a cartridge that’s “fresh” only in words may have been running well past its capacity for a long time.

There are five signs: the stream’s pressure drops; a taste or smell appears – chlorine or staleness; the water turns cloudy; buildup forms on dishes and heating elements; the time or capacity is up. Any one of them is a signal to replace, not to “push it” – a noticeable symptom means the stage has already stopped working.

A word about the fifth row of the table: a cartridge that looks fine but has passed its date is no reason to economize. Symptoms lag behind – first the filter stops cleaning, and only later does it show in taste and color.

A quick check takes a minute: pour water into a clean, clear glass and assess the color, smell, and taste, then compare the flow with what you’re used to. Do this at every scheduled replacement – you’ll get a “baseline” that lets you spot decline before it becomes a problem.

Why is an overdue cartridge dangerous?

An overdue cartridge doesn’t just stop cleaning – it starts contaminating. Accumulated chlorine, organics, and suspended solids wash back into the “filtered” water, and the porous carbon turns into a medium for bacterial growth. This isn’t obvious right away: taste and clarity degrade gradually, and people get used to the symptoms.

The mechanism is simple: the sorbent doesn’t destroy contaminants, it accumulates them. Overloaded carbon releases chlorine and organics back into the flow – this is called secondary contamination. A failed UF membrane stops being a barrier: turbidity and bacteria go straight to the spout.

A separate risk is microbiology. For schools and kindergartens, an overdue change also risks findings during an inspection: keeping equipment in working order and replacing filters on schedule are part of the requirements for drinking water at school under Kazakhstan’s rules. Inspectors care not about the filter itself, but about the recorded replacement dates.

Do you need to sanitize when replacing cartridges?

Yes – sanitizing is a mandatory part of every replacement. If you install fresh cartridges but don’t disinfect the waterway, the spout, and the bowl, biofilm from the walls will “seed” the new set within the first days of operation. The rule is simple: replacement and sanitizing are one procedure, not two separate tasks with different dates on the schedule.

Biofilm – a colony of microorganisms on internal surfaces – isn’t removed by changing cartridges: it takes a disinfecting pass through the waterway. The approach is the same one Kazakhstan’s sanitary rules set for water coolers: cleaning per the manufacturer’s instructions, with dates on record. For purifiers and drinking fountains, disinfection is part of scheduled maintenance – no separate procedure is needed if servicing runs on schedule. Frequently asked questions about cartridge replacement

Can you rinse a cartridge and put it back?

No. Purifier cartridges are single-use consumables: rinsing doesn’t restore the sorbent’s capacity and doesn’t remove the biofilm inside. A “rinsed” cartridge looks cleaner but no longer filters the water.

What if the replacement date was missed long ago?

Replace all stages as a set and sanitize the waterway. An overdue filter releases accumulated contaminants back into the water, so changing a single stage doesn’t solve the problem.

Do UF and RO membranes have different timing?
